The UltraShield screen system was first developed by Expert Shutters in 2017, originally designed for insect and solar screen applications. The concept was born out of necessity after a competing rolling screen system repeatedly failed at the Treasure Coast home of Expert Shutters’ founder, Michael Heissenberg Sr.

With decades of experience and multiple patents to his name, Michael Heissenberg Sr. was uniquely qualified to take on the challenge. He dedicated time to designing, engineering, testing, and refining what would become the UltraShield system before it officially entered the market.

Advanced Screen Engineering for Long-Term Performance

The UltraShield screen system features end retention, a patented design with heavy-duty zippers welded on all four sides. This innovative approach keeps the screen securely in place, maintaining a clean, tight appearance even after years of use.

Expert Shutters spent years manufacturing and installing the UltraShield system across the Treasure Coast while continuously refining its performance. During this time, the company also expanded production to support a growing dealer network throughout Florida.

Following the devastation of Hurricane Ian in September 2022, demand for stronger hurricane screen solutions surged. Dealers across the state turned to Expert Shutters, requesting an upgraded version of the UltraShield system capable of meeting hurricane protection standards.

Developing the Ultimate Hurricane Screen

Confident in the strength of the existing design, Michael Heissenberg Sr. returned to the lab to enhance the system into a high-performance hurricane screen. The goal was clear: exceed the rigorous requirements of the Florida Building Code.

Early testing with commonly used storm screen materials showed that a stronger solution was needed. In response, Expert Shutters partnered with Twitchell, an Alabama-based screen manufacturer, to develop a superior material: UltraShield Hurricane Fabric.

This advanced fabric is made from polyester fibers coated in PVC, delivering exceptional strength to withstand high winds, pressure changes, and flying debris. At the same time, it remains flexible enough to maintain its shape and tension after impact. Expert Shutters holds proprietary rights to this fabric, making it a standout innovation in the hurricane screen industry.

Certified Protection in High-Velocity Hurricane Zones

In fall 2023, the UltraShield system achieved approval for use in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, including Miami-Dade County, which has some of the most stringent testing standards in the country.

This hurricane screen system was engineered with longevity as a top priority. Expert Shutters focused on creating a product that requires minimal maintenance while delivering reliable protection during hurricanes and everyday wear.

Expanding Manufacturing and Industry Leadership

Today, Expert Shutters manufactures its screen systems in a 27,000-square-foot facility located off Crosstown Pkwy. and Bayshore Blvd. in Port St. Lucie. To support growing demand, the company is preparing to move into a new 108,000-square-foot facility on Midway Rd., with completion expected in summer 2026.
